For the month of April, 10% of proceeds from our online Bookstore will support 826LA, an organization dedicated to writing and reading.
826LA opened its doors in 2005, as part of the 826 Network founded by writer Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari.
826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 who attend Title I schools with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
The organization believes great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. All of 826LA’s programs are challenging and enjoyable, and strengthen each student’s power to express ideas creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice.
Over the years, more than 100,000 students have benefitted from 826LA’s programs, with support from more than 18,000 volunteers. 826LA has produced close to 900 publications by student authors.
Both writing centers, in Echo Park and Mar Vista, operate behind Time Travel Marts, convenience stores where time travelers of all ages and from all ages can purchase student writing, Mammoth Chunks, Robot Milk, and other sundries.
In 2020, 826LA responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by launching virtual versions of all its programs: Tutoring, Workshops, Field Trips, In-Schools, and College Access.
